On Tuesday we had the joy of traveling up to Louisville for the new missionary training. With president Brough and the assistants plus the six other new missionaries and their trainers! It was a rainy ride in the scheuning's truck! We made a pit stop in Danville to pick up some other elders and then enjoyed the meeting! It was a great pump up meeting! It reposted me and my spirits and helped me to refocus on the most important matters in the field, baptizing God's children and getting them to the temple! In the middle of the meeting, sister Brough stood up and said "elder patten is well and out of surgery!" Sister Schultz and I looked at each other like "what?!" Elder patten is serving in our district and we had no idea what was wrong with him or that anything had been up! He had had kidney stones and I guess this one was really bad so he had to have surgery. That made for an eventful rest of the night! We left Louisville around 3:30 and made a detour to Richmond! (Oh how I love Richmond!) We then crammed 4 elders in the back and the scheuning's and us in the front of their truck! It was quite the ride to Danville! It was tight. 8 people in a 6 seater. Haha, woop woop! We let the elders off in Danville, and embarked to London. Elder fleener and elder patten went to the London hospital but then he was transferred to UK, with their car still in London. By the time we dropped them off and returned back to Somerset, it was 9pm... What a day! So tiring, but so full of the spirit!
On Wednesday we did some serious finding and we saw miracles! We had predetermined a street to tract down and ended up on the next street over. As we were making our Way to the street, we were able to contact 7 people and 5 were interested! We have a ton of potentials to follow up with! :) prepared people are flowing! This sweet woman, Sharon, said "thank you so much for coming and talking to me! I'm shy and I would have never flagged you down!" I love people so much! :)
Thursday was entertaining. We got a phone call from a member who was yelling at us that we are doing our job wrong. We aren't taking care of the older members and they are getting used and abused. She proceeded to tell us that she was the only one with the guts to tell it to us. She then went on and on about how if our branch keeps trying to add people that we will never grow because they will fall away, just like the old members. It was completely ridiculous and uncalled for, but I rest assured with my calling to find, teach and baptize! I am here to being people closer to Christ, not to eat with members and take care of their problems with neighbors. It was a good morning laugh. We then taught persistent 80-year old linden who kept interrupting us to tell us he wanted a wife and we needed to find him one, HAHAHAHAA! It ended with him asking if I was married and if he could marry me.... So sorry linden! Not going to happen! I may or may not have told him "I'm spoken for" just to get him off my back! Haha! He will never know the truth of that statement. That happens a lot more that not out here. All the men we contact ask if we are married... Like no dudes! We sent him off with a song that was off key and hilariously done by yours truly and my incredibly musically talented companion. It was a beautiful train wreck. It is a good thing linden is almost deaf. :P the adventures of sister hannah in Kentucky right here. Real life experiences coming straight from the baptist belt. Amen.
In my studies this week, oh they were so good! I was reading about Jesus and the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead. This was a pivotal point in His ministry. This was the point where the Pharisees decided for sure that he would be out to death. the single event of raising Lazarus is what put them over the edge. It was at this point that they started planning for his crucifixion. It was all out of pride as well. They were terrified that they would lose power. Jews who saw Jesus raise Lazarus then believed and that threatened the Pharisees. It is amazing to me how people are so driven in unrighteousness because pride! Is sister Petersons words from her rs lesson on pride: "pride is the root of all sin." *mic drop and walk out.*
You can read of the miracle in John 11:1-53
Some other noteworthy verses from the Book of Mormon:
1 Nephi 1:20; tender mercies of the Lord are available to all!
1 Nephi 2:3; obedience to the Lord requires sacrifice!
1 Nephi 4:3; can we doubt the blessings from God? Do we have any place to doubt? No!
Everyone in Kentucky has a garden and it is the cutest and coolest thing ever. Not to mention that the food from the garden is 19375739202 times better than store bought! As I read over the relief society lesson, I realized how important it is to sustain ourselves and be prepared by supplying our own food. Granted, this is some what more difficult in California, but still possible!
From the RS Lesson;
-You will never wish or dream yourself into heaven. You must pay the price in toil, in sacrifice, and righteous living.
-The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah. …
… Plan to build up your food supply just as you would a savings account. Save a little for storage each pay-check. Can or bottle fruit and vegetables from your gardens and orchards. Learn how to preserve food through drying and possibly freezing. Make your storage a part of your budget. Store seeds and have sufficient tools on hand to do the job. If you are saving and planning for a second car or a TV set or some item which merely adds to your comfort or pleasure, you may need to change your priorities. We urge you to do this prayerfully and do it now. …
Halloween was fun as a missionary! We were able to chill inside on the cold and dreary night and watch a movie! (After dinner with the Peterson's of course! sister Peterson made us homemade pizza and then we decorated cookies! It was a blast!) We set up our living room with the big screen and all! Haha it was nice to have some down time after being somewhat sick! The legacy is always a winner too! :) sadly, we didn't get any trick or treaters!
I know that this is the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, not reformed in any way. I know that Jesus Christ is my savior and that my father in heaven loves me so very much. I know that the plan of salvation is true and that it will come to pass! I know that Joseph smith is the prophet of the restoration and that the Book of Mormon is the word of God!
Have the most wonderful week!
Much love from the GKLM!
Sister Hannah
